Decreasing Plagiarism by Including Turnitin in Student Writing Workflow

“Turnitin,” says Stella Stefany, Department Chair of Distance Learning at Universitas Pelita Harapan, “has changed the way students and lecturers interact.” This synergy between students and instructors has only grown since the university formally incorporated Turnitin into students’ writing workflow, directly enhancing the learning process. Says Stella:

“Since UPH’s implementation is through the LMS, Turnitin is experienced not mainly as a ‘testing’ tool for assignments, but rather as a ‘learning’ tool. Lecturers who turn on Turnitin in the forum for discussions obtain an indication of how students analyze certain topics. Students who see their own Turnitin results might learn to improve their writing styles.”

The results have been tangible. Stella says unlimited submissions enable students to check their work for plagiarism before asking instructors for writing feedback. This has promoted sophisticated student-lecturer discussions, resulting in improved student academic writing skills.

Since adopting Turnitin in October 2018, Stella says that the number of submissions that exceed 50% similarity has dropped to 5% from 48%.
